The Creator of "Tom & Jerry and "Popeye" Gene Deitch passes away

Gene Deitch, The Creator of "Tom & Jerry and "Popeye" passes away at the age of 95 years, Thank you for making our childhood memorable.

Its a tragic day for comic lover, particularly those who liked most the cartoon Tom and Jerry, and Popeye. Oscar winning artist and executive Gene Ditch has died in Prague, Czech Republic. 

Eugene Merril Deitch was an American-Czech illustrator, animator, comic’s artist, and film director. Based in Prague since 1959, Deitch was known for creating animated cartoons such as Munro, Tom Terrific, and Nudnik, as well as his work on the Popeye and Tom and Jerry series.

Deitch met his first wife, Marie, when they both worked at North American Aviation, and they married in 1943. Their three sons, Kim, Simon, and Seth Deitch, are artists and writers for underground comix and alternative comics.

Several days after arriving in Prague in October 1959, Deitch met Zdenka Najmanová, the production manager at the studio Bratři v triku where he worked. They married in 1964.Deitch's memoir, For the Love of Prague, is based on his experience of being what he called the only free American living and working in Prague during 30 years of the Communist Party dictatorship". According to Deitch, although he was followed by the StB and his phone was tapped, he was never aware of their presence and was never interrogated nor arrested.

His demise was reported by his Czech Publisher, Petr Himmel, who disclosed to AP that Deitch kicked the bucket suddenly and at this stage no additional data can be given.  

In 1960, he coordinated the short Munro that went onto win an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, making the film the first non-American short to be given this respect. From 1960 to 1963, Deitch worked together with Rembrandt to coordinate Popeye kid's shows for TV with King Features, and from 1961 to 1962 he coordinated 13 new Tom and Jerry shorts for MGM. 

Deitch died at 95 years old, and is made due by his better half and three children. Deitch died in Prague on April 16, 2020, Shortly before his death, Deitch had noted intestinal problems.
